Getting to 6 months and still feeling fantastic!!!

Time for yet another update on that wonderful adventure I embark on on Nov 29th 2015...

Remember by 367 days shopping ban? You can read about it here...

And the latest update was almost 3 months ago!

As we are now April 22nd, I can say that I am almost half way... or am I??? This has been so much easier then I thought... I don't think I will ever go back to my old ways!!! I don't even feel good being in a regular store anymore!!! All I can see is the misery this is causing... and it makes me want to cry!

Lately I have gotten for summer:
1) a skirt locally made by an artist who uses only upcycled fabrics - I loved the idea more then I needed the skirt and I also wanted to encourage her! Plus it is super cute and I'll wear it for years to come!
2) a pair of pants that I turned into short from Value Village - these are the result of me throwing away a pair of short that was to big for me now as I had it for years and wore it with a belt...
3) a skirt from Value Village that can actually be 4 seasons - these are the result of having a pair of short that is now to small for me as I have gained weight over the last winter

These items actually follow the rules... maybe not 1) per say as I did not really needed it but I can live with it since it is not using new fabric and it is locally made by an amazing woman!

I may have to look into a few tops now - thinking one red and one brown... but it can wait.... and I need to still follow my rules!

I also bought a pair of hiking shoes brand new of course.... as my husband and I are planning on taking up this activity (I mentioned it 3 months ago)... I needed some good footwear not to hurt myself. And actually my husband bought them for me so I did not spend the money... technically! I said I would accept gift and this was a lovely one!

Aside from those new shoes I am doing pretty good...at not buying anything new and for myself when I don't need it! I actually do not even "desire" stuff anymore! Who would have thought I would say that one day???

I have completed 6 months and didn't really buy anything from "real store" aside from a shirt as I had received a gift card from American Eagle... and underwear - There is not way I am buying this used!

I keep getting my books at the library... or used book store where I can resell them later...

I honestly thought I would struggle more with this then I do... but it feels good not to! Because I have so much time on my hand now I started a reading marathon! My objective is to have read 42 books in 2016! I am now up to 17!!! The public library is now my favorite place!

I also picked up my yoga/meditation practice... and I am starting to work out for those hiking trips my husband and I are planning on!

Meaning and Purpose...

This post came to me while I was doing today's yoga practise...

For years, I have been looking for a meaning to my life... for a purpose...  thinking there MUST be more... there HAS to be more than this...

And my husband and I strongly disagreed on the subject... one of the only one...  but I must admit today, he may have been right... He use to tell me that there is no meaning to life... none of it makes sense... and we have no real purpose aside from living...  doing the best we can with what we have... all based on loving kindness...

Well what if life has no meaning?  What if none of it makes sense really?  And the "older" I get, the more I seem to realize that nothing makes much sense...  nothing is really explainable... and I am not saying that in a way that makes you completely out of control of your life...  I still think that the decisions we made in our past makes us who we are today and dictates the conditions of our lives...  and so it goes for our future which is design based on what we do today! But in the big picture, nothing REALLY makes sense... you can't scientifically come up with rules or equations that explain life... and that, may, in the end, be the beauty of it.  There is not direct consistent action-reaction relationship. A complete stranger and I can make the same decision today and five months from now it will have brought us in two completely different places... What if the meaning of life was just for us to be alive and part of something bigger?  Do any other animals inquire about their meaning on this planet?  In this Universe?  They simply live... that is their meaning.   Maybe ours is just that too. Maybe we are wasting time trying to find meaning to something that doesn't have any and it robs us of our precious time here on this planet.  For time is infinite for the Universe but quite finite for us. This is why, in today's practise, I came with this huge urge to just live my life and stop looking for meaning... And this is what I will do from now on. No more searching. Just living.

And what if each and every one of us do not really have a specific purpose?  What if our purpose is just to do the best we can with what we have... always based on love?  What if the purpose was simply love? I am not saying that you or I don't matter....  I strongly believe that we do matters and everything we do/think matters...  but there probably is no written purpose anywhere for every human stepping foot on the face of this planet...  If our purpose is just love in all aspect of our lives everything seems so simple...  just love your life!  Love yourself... Love your friends and family... Love where you live... Love your home...  Love your "just enough" material possessions... Love your work...  Love your free time...  Love your leisure activities... Love the fact that ALL of it will come and go... nothing last forever... but there is always someone else or something else to love... Love the fact that there will be good times and bad times... for without the bad times we would not appreciate the good ones...  and without the good ones we'd have nothing to hope for when the bad times are there...

And again, I spent so much time trying to find a bigger purpose to my life...  but WHY?  I love my son and husband...  I love cooking for them... I love my job...  I love my very few friends....  I love what I can do with my free time... and that is a great PURPOSE in life:  LOVE!   I believe that if everyone would love their life as much as I do, this world would be a better place as no one would be looking/searching for something else all the time... people would be less stress...  lest anxious...  There would be no need for over consumption, addictions, and all those "modern illness" caused by the fact that we think there is something bigger and we must attain it! And then at this point, it will all makes sense...

Nothing makes sense
There is no bigger purpose then love
And yes you do matter

Be who you are... DREAM your life... LIVE your dream...

Hurtful maybe.... but in the end helpful!

Almost two years ago, one of the people I had always respected and cared for in my life told me something that was very hurtful.  Something that actually broke the care and respect I had for her... If she told me that, she obviously never even tried understanding me and she certainly had no respect for who I had became.  It hurt... and I thought about it for a LONG time...  and I thought it was resolve....  until I came across this article two weeks, or just about, ago.  Then it resurfaced...  and forced me to figure it out... And I did... and this is why today, I am ready to write about it.

What this person had told me was that I should have more "ambition".  Now, it referred to the fact that I work part time in a coffee shop...  I live in a small town in a apartment, I have no car... and own very little furniture...  and I am, in no way, ever, aiming to get back to that place in my life where I was very unhappy and sick but... I had a house (not a home), two new cars, travelled twice a year,  had lots of furniture and Nick-knack...  way too much clothes and jewelry...  picture frames every where... books and more books.... CDs...  DVD... my kitchen cupboards were filled with stuff... so was my pantry and fridge even thus I ate out most of the time....  I spent time shopping and eating out... or cleaning... but mostly working to make enough money to buy all that...crap!

This person, considered who I was before as someone who had a successful life as is expected once you obtain a bachelor degree...  I know I hurt her when I chose a different life... slowly but surely I went from that unhealthy stressful (but deemed successful) life to something much more healthy, peaceful and sustainable...  for my husband and son.... and actually the whole planet!

I am now eating a whole food plant-based diet...  I own very little and only stuff I really need/use/like!  I no longer shop... rarely eat out... I do not own anything I cannot bring with me in a suitcase/moving truck... My mean of transportation are my legs as they carry me, at no cost, where ever I want... I am at a point in my life where I could grab a suitcase, choose what I want to bring along and leave the rest behind...  no regrets!
I don't even have credit or a line of credit anymore -adios credit cards, personal loans and line of credit.... if I don't have the money, I go without!

Now, I understand why this may seem like not having enough ambition - to some...  but if you think it through, living this way in today's society is not that easy... and to me ambition does not mean an easy fight!

And what is ambition anyway? Destroying the planet by our over-consumerism way of life? Following what everyone does? Getting a high end paying job to buy stuff you do not need to impress people you do not like?

What is your definition of ambition?

What if ambition was living a healthy peaceful life? What if ambition was taking the best possible care of yourself to be able to care for your family?  What if ambition was learning to cook healthy whole food plant-base meals? What if ambition was to share your acquired knowledge? What if ambition had nothing to do with you self-centered need but was greater then that?

My definition of ambition is attaining a healthy, peaceful life despite what most of our capitalist society thinks... it means doing more with less... it means not hurting my body, mind, soul by acting according to beliefs that I was brainwashed with all while I grew up... It means taking care of myself to the best of my knowledge... continuously improving the way I do so by looking for more information, obtaining more accurate knowledge... it means staying clear of masses because you know what other word is included in masses...

What if ambition was define this way in today's society?  Wouldn't it be a better place to live? Wouldn't it assure our kids and grand-kids a planet and food for them?

Be who you are... DREAM your life... LIVE your dream...

A few of my recipes....

As promise, here are a few of my go-to recipes...

I mentioned before that I was trying to simplify my eating...
Adopting the McDougall program surely did that...  and as I was already vegan, the transition has not been to hard.  I can surely say that I am 95% McDougalling... hahaha! Yes this is a term in his group discussions and FB page!

Them main goal of eating this way is to:

- add starches to your diet (potatoes, rice, complete grains... and potatoes!)
- avoid all animal product
- eat real food (no process stuff, no supplements)
- eat food in it's most natural state (no juices or smoothies)
- stay clear of refined flour and sugar
- avoid fat in all process ways (margarine, oil...)

Basically eat starches, fruits and veggies till you're full...  eat less protein.... and very little fat!

It is called the WFPB diet (whole food plant based diet)

There are many scientific evidences over the course of decades and in many different areas of this planet that point towards this being the healthiest diet for our bodies!

All that being said, you can make your own research as I provided the link to start off with....  You can also read this book (and he has a few more) and make you own decisions....  but whether you opt for that program or not, the recipes I am sharing down here are delicious, simple and cheap.... as well as nutritious! Enjoy!

Tomatoes barley soup.

onion finely chopped
clove garlic finely chopped
mushrooms to taste finely chopped
barley
can tomatoes (diced or pureed depending on your preference)
veggie broth
Italian herbs

I am leaving quantities up to you as you can adapt according to your liking...

Sauteed in a little water (remember we use no oil when possible) the onion, garlic and mushroom until they are tender.  Add the barley and mix well. Add the Italian herbs and mix some more. When all this is well mixed, add the veggie broth and can of tomatoes.  Bring to a boil.  Lower heat and cook until the barley is ready.  More or less an hour.  Allow to stand for 15-20 minutes before serving.

This soup is delicious as is...  you can also do a version without the tomatoes if you wish.... In which case I call it my mushroom barley soup!  I also did that exact same soup without the mushrooms but find that they add some earthy flavors that I very much like. Technically, you could also add celery (with the onions mixture at the beginning)...  and why not finely cut spinach at the end of cooking time? But I like to keep it simple....

You can easily freeze left over of that soup.

Along side of that soup, you can serve Cubed bake tofu.

Take a block of firm tofu and cut into cube.  Season with soy sauce and garlic powder.  Mix.  Bake at 350F for about 30 minutes (depending on your oven). There is your added protein - for those who prefer more protein still... Even if there is sufficient proofs that we, in America eat on average as much as 3 times more proteins then we need!
Just make sure your tofu does not have "soy isolate protein" which is process.  I also always make sure to buy organic tofu - this is the one of the products I will not buy non-organic!

You can also serve that soup with Cubed bake potatoes.

This is something my family eats almost every single day of the week...

Peel and cube potatoes.  Place in mixing bowl and add salt, Italian herbs and paprika.  Mix well. Bake at 420F for 30-40 minutes depending on the potatoes.

You can also do that with sweet potatoes in which case I skip the Italian herbs and add cayenne.  It gives you sweet and spicy potatoes!  Make sure you adjust cooking time as they often cook in less time then regular potatoes!

So..... there you have it! One of my regular meals...  we eat this once a week...

Hope you'll try and enjoy it!
Do not hesitate to share with me variations to these...  I am always in for trying variations of something that I  love...  it makes it more fun!

3 months done and feeling fantastic!!!

As you may remember, on Nov 29th of 2015, the most exiting shopping day of the Year (Black Friday), I started a shopping ban for 367 days! Let's talk about going against the main flow...

Well yesterday on Feb 29th, I had gone 3 months without shopping/buying anything for myself...  or did I???

Well....... I kind of did!  Here's what happen:

Books:

I read 6 from the library since the beginning of the year...
And I did buy 2 books... that I know I will read over and over again...  They were both about 10$ each.

Actually, not shopping physically or on line allowed me much more time to read and in the first 2 months of the year, I actually read 8 books and started another more intense one that I will need to read slowly...

This is AWESOME as I love to read but never had "time" to do so!

I did not "not have time"... my priorities were in the wrong place!

Clothes:

My worse nightmare... or is it still???

Well... not at ALL! Not anymore anyway...

I am OK with not shopping for clothes... and actually I don't even feel like doing it!
The fashion/clothing industry is so detrimental to our planet and it's people that I just can't do it for now and when I have to, it makes me so sad...

I remember one sentence in the movie "Sweet November" said by Charlize Theron that was something like "well it is just clothes, it is meant to cover your body so who cares"... or something close to that...  It helps me a lot lately!

For example, I had to buy underwear.... I was long overdue...  and I did buy them... but this is one of the things (along with footwear) that I refuse to buy use... and I couldn't find sustainably made where I live... Also, as it is a replacement of something I own and is no longer usable, it doesn't break the rules per say.

So I did buy my underwear... and spend 48$.  I should be good for the next year.... or perhaps a little longer!

I also bought harem pants from a site on line...  they are lovely and cost me 31$.  This, quite frankly, I had no real need for it... but a friend wanted to buy without having to pay for shipping and I really LOVE harem pants and wear hem more and more during summer!  They are the perfect fit between a skirt and shorts!!! Also they do not come from a sweat shop so that could be OK if I don't over do it!

Other stuff:

Aside from food...  I only bought filters for my water filtering system... 5 of them should last me a year and they were just about 20$.

What do I expect over the next few months?

Well I know I will definitely need footwear as all I own is falling into pieces....  and we are planning to start hiking this summer so I need shoes for that definitely!

I will have to look into getting a new bicycle as mine was stolen last fall when I put it away for winter.... That I am definitely getting second hand!

Aside from that, all my money is going into "buying experiences" instead of stuff!
Buying time by allowing myself to work less since I "need" less money...
I will soon be debt free and hence able to enjoy life more!  And the good news is , by not over spending on stuff I do not need that could destroy the planet and take the lives of poor people we are abusing to produce them , I will not go into debt again!!!  Both other times where I got debt free, I soon after got back into it!!! I needed to get the stuff!!!  What could I have expected?

But  now, all this is behind me...  I am free...  free from over consumption...
I am not a slave to advertising companies!
I am not a slave to our capitalist system who makes us believe buying stuff will buy us happiness...  friends... love and so much more!  When in fact, it does the exact opposite! They want us to believe it because if enough people start believing what I do believe in and live like I live, well the economy will crash and all those rich people will not be making millions anymore by abusing us as workers and spenders! By getting us into debt...  by enslaving us to jobs we do because they give us big money... and hence allow us to buy stuff we do not need to impress people we do not really like... and never get out of the destructive pattern!

Quite frankly, when I started this 367 days shopping ban I was terrified... as I tried this type of challenge before and inevitably failed.... I was not ready for it...  I didn't know if that time I was!  Although I had been shopping less and less over the last year, sometimes all I need is an interdiction to do something to want to do it more! But I also knew that I completely turned around the way I eat so I could do that to! There was/is hope!

I think all the documentaries I have watched did help me....  here are links to 2 of them...
Have a look and you can choose if they are for you or not at this point in your life...

The true cost

Zeitgeist In total there a 3 documentaries to watch called Zeitgeist.  All great!

These were real eye openers for me... as I hope they will be for you...

In the meantime, I will keep on "not shopping" and do other stuff instead...
I did address my desire to read more... In the next few months, I will be working on my desire to spend more time doing yoga/meditation and find a way to create time, by addressing priorities, to do just that!

I will get back to you soon on my 367 days shopping ban as spring is really one of my weakest time when it comes to shopping!

Be who you are... DREAM your life... LIVE your dream...

Real food found in my kitchen...

Beginning of the year I had decided to  simplify what is in my kitchen and the way I eat if you remember...

I did cut down the number of recipes I do on a regular basis... and kept the simpler ones!

I did change the way I had breakfast and lunch Monday to Friday...

Of course, if I did not have a growing teenage boy in my home and a loving husband who's job it to move around roughly 3000 lb of stuff daily I might be able to simplify furthermore...  And this is why, in this post, I will address only the way I eat... because unless you are a kid/teenager or a very overly physical active adult, they way I eat can fit you.... and the calories restriction is actually good for you!

I want to start this series of post by telling you what is in my kitchen cupboard, fridge and freezer that I eat on a regular basis... It is of course, based on a whole food, plant base diet with little or no added oil/fat. After years of research and having a scientific background, I came to the conclusion that the McDougall way of eating is one of the simplest, cheapest and more complete one... and after years of using this program as a Dr, he has enough significant data to prove that it can guarantee you a healthy and long life...

I am not saying that everything I have in my home is perfect... and I am still working on improving it but for now, I think it is good enough!  Of course if you have any tips, do not hesitate to share!

In my freezer:

Cooked chick peas and black beans - always ready to be used...
A few mason jar of left over home made meals for those days where I don't feel like cooking!
Homemade hummus -  I make a big batch at once and freeze in small mason jar for weekly use portion
Flax seeds - whole
Whole grain bread - locally made
Frozen raspberries, blueberries, pineapple, peaches, strawberries
Frozen corn, green peas, spinach, green beans, broccoli

In my fridge:

Walnuts, pecans, almonds all raw... and in mason jars... a mason jar last anywhere from 2-3 months
Apple sauce
Homemade local raspberries and blueberries jams
Vegan margarine
Nutritional yeast
Salsa
Fat free Italian dressing
Teryaki sauce
Soy sauce
Lemon juice
Organic peanut butter
Maple syrup
Maple butter (which is just concentrated maple syrup and has no fat for my foreign readers)
Pickled beets (homemade and local)
Sun dried tomatoes
Roasted red bell peppers
Olives
Grounded flax seeds
Organic tofu (firm)
Organic unsweetened soy milk
Perrier water - to mix with ice tea...  very yummy and much better then soft drinks!
Variety of fruits and veggies: carrots, celery, cucumbers, green onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, apples, grapefruit, oranges, lemons, avocado... mostly those!
And of course a variety of cooked rice, beans, hummus, left overs depending on when you look in it!

In my pantry:

Whole grain low fat cereals with no sugar added mostly...
Whole wheat or multi grains bread
Rye bread
Whole wheat or multi grains tortillas
Oat
Barley
Brown rice
White navy beans (dry)
Black beans (dry and one can of organic non-pba lined)
Chick peas (dry and one can of organic non-pba lined)
Red lentils
Brown lentils
Firm tofu
2-3 cans of ground tomatoes
1 can of diced tomatoes
Herbs and spices (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, Italian, parsley, chili, cayenne, smoked paprika, coriander, turmeric, cumin, salt, black pepper)
Veggie broth
Pure vanilla extract
Pure lemon extract
BBQ sauce
Mustard
Vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
Sambal oaelek
Rice vinegar
Balsamic vinegar
Canola oil
Whole wheat paste
Rice vermicelli
Rice paper
Norri sheets
Unbleached all-purpose flour
Whole wheat flower
Brown rice flower
Bread crumbs
Corn starch
Baking powder
Baking soda
Raw cane sugar
Brown sugar (vegan version)
Raw pistachios
Raisins
Cranberries
Dates
Apricots
Teas (organic vanilla rooibos, fennel seeds, mint, jade citrus mint, herbal vanilla chai, pineapple, passion tango - last two are to make iced mix with sparkling water)
Potatoes
Sweet potatoes
Onions
Garlic
Corn kernel
Bananas

Or course to this, you would have to add anything my son and husband like to eat... that I normally do not eat... but it is all vegan or course...  and it is not necessary to have those items - personally I don't have them very often but sometimes as a treat I may be tempted... We are talking here dry roasted salted cashews and veggie burger for example!

This is it! for any recipes I will share with you over the next few weeks, you will find all you need in there! Unless I forgot something...  In which case, I am really sorry...

Remember, I am aiming for a whole food plant base diet with little to no added oil.... and although this list may seems exhaustive to look at for beginners, it is actually way more simple then when I initially started my vegan diet 3 years ago!

The number of meal you can make out of those ingredients are endless.... and all this for a very low cost actually!  Who ever said a vegan diet was expensive most likely did a very complicated one!  Relying on highly process vegan food...

Dry beans, rice, barley and oat is fairly inexpensive where ever you are... especially if you buy in bulk!

Fruits and veggies can be a challenge in the winter months but this is why I get frozen ones...  and add them to my cereals, oatmeal, pancakes etc...

So here you go!  You can go grocery shop now if you don't already have those items in your home!!!
And for the next few weeks, we'll be cooking and baking all sorts of things!

But please remember, I am not a food blogger and have no intention to become one... the pictures won't be very frequent... I only wish to share what I eat because some of you asked...

Be who you are... DREAM your life... LIVE your dream...

Why moving help me define who I am

This picture was taken right before we closed the door of our last moving truck (June 2014).  There really was not more then that.  It was a 14' truck and we did not even manage to fill it between the 3 of us!

But let's back track...

I spent the first 23 years of my life in the same home.  Born and raised in one place...
Then I moved out in my first apartment into which I stayed for 2 years... and bought a home.  Into which I was convinced, at the time, that I would spend the rest of my life in... I stayed there 4 years... That was in 2002 and ever since that day, of Oct 31st 2002 I have stayed in 6 more homes. Including another house from 2002 to 2006... then apartments!

I discovered that I LOVE moving!!!  I was, up until almost 2 years ago, always in the same city but it was a huge one and quite frankly I have lived in many very different parts of it... Every time requires adaptation... Every time required you go through your stuff and box it up or let it go... Every time you need to re-install yourself and once again choose where everything goes and if everything needs or deserve to stay part of your life... Every time by going through your physical stuff you cleanse physically but also psychologically! Letting go or keeping stuff has an immense power over your life... believe it or not.

I won't lie... moving from my first apartment into my first house was a nightmare!  I was highly unprepared and really stressed out! I cared to much about everything... and it made it not fun!

However, after that, it all became more fun every time... I feel like I am born again and can re-invent myself!

No one knows you on a new street... so you can break old pattern without worrying people will talk...  You can create a new life and attract more like minded people... You can completely dress in a different way and no one will know...  It's like you are a brand new person! It's a white canvas that you paint how you like...
Of course you can always paint over an existing canvas but the work required is much more...

This, the white canvas, actually holds even more true if you move far far away!  On my last move, we took the moving truck 973km away from our original town...  We switch province...  We had to say good bye to everyone we knew all our life including family...  We moved into a city where no one knew us... Into a place where there was no such jobs as what we use to do...

Three completely white canvas that were to be painted how we wanted them to be...

Whether we like to admit it or not our families, friends, work collegue can hold us back if we want to make a 180 degree change to our lives...  because they may not be ready to do so themselves... because they may not want to loose you... because it may triggers insecurities a about their own lives!

Moving can sometimes be the best option.

We needed to step away from our old life and even though moving every 2 years or so was a nice progress... the actual complete switch occurred when we completely moved away!

No one knew us... no more family engagement... no work obligations... no social gatherings... All 3 of us in a new city and open to completely different opportunities!

My son turned into a fine young man... and I have seen him blossom... Really! I have never seen him so confident...  and well surrounded.
My husband found his dream job and even though it was less money then he made in the last 25 years of his life he had to try cause there was nothing else (it was something he was considering back in Montreal but would not accept the pay cut)...  he ended up really loving it!
I have managed to work part time and be able to concentrate on my family life and health.  This was what was most important to me....  have I not moved here, it would have been way more difficult to do so...

By considering moving anywhere you can actually look into what suits you! Not all cities, even within the same country, offer the same advantages, have the same cost of living and the same environment...  There can be huge differences!

I truly believe that in Montreal, having spend 41 years there I could have never become who I am now... I tried but there was too many obstacles of all kind!  I was able to somewhat be who I wanted to be but some parts were inaccessible for many different reasons.

And this is why I have not created roots anywhere since I moved in 2006...  I no longer wish to... I stay somewhere as long as I see it fit and then move on... My home is where my husband, son and I are...

It will be the same with Moncton... It is perfect now but I will want to move again one day...  the only difference is that now, I will not move within the same city (Moncton is so small that anywhere you go you see the same faces - or pretty much - even after only 19 months spent here)...  If I move, I am going elsewhere... I am trying something different...  completely different because really having roots is not for me - or not that kind of roots anyway.  I love to try different things, meet new people and see different landscape!

Be who you are... DREAM your life... LIVE your dream...
